How does hail damage the roof over time?

  • Hail loosens the bond between the granules and the asphalt layers.
  • If the underlayment is exposed, it is further damaged by weather and UV rays.
  • Winter’s harsh temperatures cause small cracks and holes to expand and contract, creating larger areas of vulnerability.
  • These exposed areas deteriorate at a quicker pace than the rest of the shingles and could create tiny holes where water can leak through.

Ten steps for a successful experience repairing your damage

  1. Call your insurance claims department to get the process started.
  2. Choose a contractor you trust, not a low price. Insurance claims pay the exact same no matter who does the work.
  3. Don’t “hide” your insurance estimate from your contractor hoping to get a cheaper price. Insurance work is completed based on the scope of damages and the pricing determined by your insurance company.
  4. Avoid Insurance Fraud. In Colorado it is illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate, or discount to cover your deductible or to put money in your pocket.
  5. Go local! Don’t sign with anyone who promises to deliver materials right away for a deposit and work things out on the back end.
  6. ALWAYS meet with your roofing contractor to examine the damages. You want to meet the person you are going to trust with repairing your most valuable asset.
  7. Check that the general contractor is properly licensed in your jurisdiction and is a member of the Colorado Roofing Association.
  8. Don’t pay any money down. A reputable company will not ask for any money until materials have been delivered and work has begun.
  9. Communicate with your contractor during the process. Is there something you don’t understand on the claim, a question about repairs you think were missed by the insurance adjuster? We can help.
  10. BE PATIENT. Thousands of homes have been damaged and it takes time to properly inspect and repair damages to each house.
