How does hail damage the roof over time?
- Hail loosens the bond between the granules and the asphalt layers.
- If the underlayment is exposed, it is further damaged by weather and UV rays.
- Winter’s harsh temperatures cause small cracks and holes to expand and contract, creating larger areas of vulnerability.
- These exposed areas deteriorate at a quicker pace than the rest of the shingles and could create tiny holes where water can leak through.
Ten steps for a successful experience repairing your damage
- Call your insurance claims department to get the process started.
- Choose a contractor you trust, not a low price. Insurance claims pay the exact same no matter who does the work.
- Don’t “hide” your insurance estimate from your contractor hoping to get a cheaper price. Insurance work is completed based on the scope of damages and the pricing determined by your insurance company.
- Avoid Insurance Fraud. In Colorado it is illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate, or discount to cover your deductible or to put money in your pocket.
- Go local! Don’t sign with anyone who promises to deliver materials right away for a deposit and work things out on the back end.
- ALWAYS meet with your roofing contractor to examine the damages. You want to meet the person you are going to trust with repairing your most valuable asset.
- Check that the general contractor is properly licensed in your jurisdiction and is a member of the Colorado Roofing Association.
- Don’t pay any money down. A reputable company will not ask for any money until materials have been delivered and work has begun.
- Communicate with your contractor during the process. Is there something you don’t understand on the claim, a question about repairs you think were missed by the insurance adjuster? We can help.
- BE PATIENT. Thousands of homes have been damaged and it takes time to properly inspect and repair damages to each house.
