Whew! We just finished up with the Spring Home Show Booth, that is always a busy and fun time. We really enjoy seeing what the market is bringing for the new season. It is a great time to reconnect with our existing clients and meet new clients.

If you are like most of us, you gathered more information in that visit than you can remember or use. Now is the time to look back at the flyers, business cards and brochures you gathered and see how to make the most of what is out in the market.

  1. We recommend sorting all of the literature by type: windows, fireplaces, yard décor, you get the idea.
  2. Next rank each category, what do you want to do this spring, summer, or save for next year.
  3. Make some phone calls or emails to set up consultations.
  4. Allow enough time & don’t rush. When you invite people over for an estimate, clear your schedule and give them your full attention. You’ll be glad you did so they can best help you.
  5. Have all of your decision makers at the appointment so everyone is informed and there are no surprises.
  6. Review your budget and modify plans if needed.
  7. Secure your financing and sign the paperwork.

Once your project is on order, it is hurry up and wait time. Now is a good time to prep your home space before the product arrives and the crew begins work. Lead times are extended for most home improvement items, and the warmer months are when most homeowners are looking to get their work scheduled, too. Don’t get caught off guard and wait too late to get your order in, better to commit now and use the waiting period time to get ready.

  • For exterior projects, you may need to clear out some landscaping or get rid of debris or old patio & yard décor that is in the way.
  • If you are getting new patio furniture to go on a newly built deck, take measurements and get that ordered so it is all ready to go.
  • For work being done inside, again, look at your rooms and begin to clean out some workspace for the crew in the areas of your project.
  • Are there pieces of furniture that may need to be temporarily relocated, if so, start that planning now.

Tips to be better prepared for next year—

  • Take pictures of the areas in your house you are looking for improvements on
  • Bring samples of ideas you like, think about putting together a wish list
  • Measure the space so you’ll be prepared
  • Know the color scheme you have at home, what will work and what accents you’re looking to add.
